"US: India's missile test 'not a surprise,'" China Economic Net, July 11, 2006.

The White House said on Monday it had been informed by India before its latest missile test, which, therefore, was "not a surprise."

White House spokesman Tony Snow told a press briefing that the U.S. government are "aware and understood that there would be a routine test and the Indian government did notify us in advance."

"So it did not come as a surprise, " he said.

Snow also said Pakistan was alerted about the test in advance, too.

India test fired the Agni-III longest-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile for the first time Sunday, but it failed to hit the target.

Agni III develops snag: report
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2006-07-10 12:50

The Agni III missile test on Sunday morning has been a failure after the missile developed a snag, New Delhi TV (NDTV) reported.

The snag comes after Agni-III was blasted off from the Wheeler Island off the Bhadrak coast of Orissa, NDTV reported.

The test flight was witnessed by Indian Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee and several senior members of India's defense establishment.

The Agni-III, which has a range of 3,500 km, is the longest missile India has so far.

The earlier variants of the missile, the Agni I and Agni II, are fully operational and are being gradually introduced to the armed forces.

India had twice postponed the Agni III tests in the past one year for fear of an adverse impact on the progress of the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear deal.

Last month, the Indian defense minister while denying any pressure from the United States had said India was observing self-restraint in not testing its nuclear capable missile.
