Military refusal motion in Canadian Parliament.

Kim Rivera voices her fears of being deported and her desire to stay in Canada with her family, “I am afraid that if I am forced to go back I would be put in prison and separated from my husband and children. In Canada our family can live together in peace. Please let us stay.”

First the NDP, followed by the Green Party and the Bloc Quebecois, and now the Liberal Party of Canada are all in support of voting on the motion in the House of Commons that would allow conscientious objectors to apply for permanent resident status in Canada and would stop the deportation of war resisters of any war not sanctioned by the UN. The vote is scheduled to be taken on Tuesday at 3 PM eastern time (noon here), and can be followed on CPAC or viewed on line at cpac.ca.

The motion:
The Committee recommends that the government immediately implement a program to allow conscientious objectors and their immediate family members (partners and dependents), who have refused or left military service related to a war not sanctioned by the United Nations and do not have a criminal record, to apply for permanent resident status and remain in Canada; and that the government should immediately cease any removal or deportation actions that may have already commenced against such individuals.

On Wednesday, June 4th, there will be a gathering at 6:30, at 2104 Creek Street, of all supporters (that's you) to discuss the outcome of this momentous vote and to decide how we, in the Kootenay's, will mark this decision. Come by or call 352-0740. Snacks available.

'War the UN does not sanction'?
What if the Canadian government sanctioned a war that the UN does not?
Did the UN sanction the Second World War?
Would the UN sanction a war against Canada by some Islamic nations if Russia and China supported them.
The UN can't agree when to wipe their own butts let alone agree on a war that could cost some of its own leaders the skim from an Oil For Food program.
Give me a break and send the deserters back or to jail.
