Private security contractors for Canadian reconstruction project in Afghanistan?

The CBC reports that Foreign Minister David Emerson was flown into the Arghandab River valley in northern Kandahar province on Friday. The river is the site of a dam reconstruction project. Canada has promised to invest as much as $50 million over three years to repair the dam and its irrigation system.

Two weeks ago, Andrew Mayeda of CanWest News Services reported that the federal government has warned bidders on the Dahla Dam project that they will largely be responsible for their own security. Galloping Beaver has discussed the likelihood that the project will signal the introduction of private security firms associated with Canada's presence in Afghanistan.
