"Stormy debate in Davos over Gaza," Al Jazeera, January 29, 2009.

[To get a sense of the meaning and importance of this unfortunate story, it is relevant to recall that Turkey was the first Muslim country to recognize Israel (March 28, 1949). More recently, Turkey allowed IDF and Israeli security forces to gather electronic intelligence on Syria and Iran from Turkey. Through NATO, the two countries engage in military exercises together. (Chossudosky Aug 6 06) In November, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer expressed the view that if Israel were to attack Iran, it would do so using Turkish, not Iraqi, air space. He is also quoted as having said, "When Israel attacked the reactor in Syria, it went up the Mediterranean and through Turkish air space" (Press TV Nov 28 08). Many questions here. -jlt]

The Turkish prime minister has stormed out of a heated debate at the World Economic Forum in Davos over Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan walked out of the televised debate on Thursday, after the moderator refused to allow him to rebut the Israeli president's justification about the war that left about 1,300 Gazans dead.
