The financial predicament of the CBC has triggered a resumption of the debate over the place of public television in Canada and a new round of calls by the corporation's many critics to move it to a remote space in the broadcast universe commensurate with its modest audience share.
In that debate, the federal decision to let the chips of the recession fall where they may rather than give the CBC the financial flexibility to weather a sharp drop in advertising revenues has largely emerged as a secondary consideration.
Instead, even the minister of heritage, James Moore, has given himself licence to pronounce on the programming decisions of the public network. In contrast with its anglophone sister, Radio-Canada television has never emerged as a popular whipping boy in francophone Canada.
