"Quebec City mayor presses for TGV," Montreal Gazette, March 24, 2009.

Régis Labeaume, Quebec City's flamboyant mayor, wants to make a very fast train like France's TGV, capable of carrying passengers from the capital toMont-real in under an hour, an issue in the next federal election.

Via Rail trains now cover the distance in about three hours.

On the weekend, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff made a pitch for Quebecers to turn away from the Conservatives and the Bloc Québécois.

At a conference on "sustainable mobility" yesterday, Labeaume set the price for his support.

"It should be an issue in the next election," Labeaume said at the opening session of the conference organized by the French consul general in Quebec City.

Labeaume wants a French-style train à grande vitesse, using dedicated tracks and travelling 320 kilometres per hour.
